FAQ

How do I adjust my profile picture?

You can add a photo in the APS system by following these instructions:

  1. Ensure you are logged in to your account.
  2. Click the arrow next to the avatar placeholder icon in the upper right corner.
  3. Click Profile.
  4. Click Actions next to the profile icon and click Change picture.
  5. A popup screen (below) will open to allow you to upload a profile picture from a source you choose. Select a photo to upload and click Save.
  6. To return to STEP UP go to STEPUPphysics.org or navigate to “My Connections”/ “Communities” and click on STEP UP.

How do I adjust my privacy settings?

You can decide what information on your profile is visible to the public, your contacts only, members only, or only you. You can also decide if you want to be included in the Engage Directory and your community rosters.

  1. Go to Profile (see steps 1-3 of changing your Profile Picture).
  2. Click My Account and Privacy Settings.
  3. Each individual setting can be adjusted to My Contacts, Members Only, Public, and Only Me.
    • Note: Default public settings are for Picture, Company Information, Country, Website URL, Bio, vCard Download, Presentation. If you do not have info in these sections, there is nothing to share.
  4. Hit Save Changes at the bottom of the page.
  5. To return to STEP UP go to STEPUPphysics.org or navigate to “My Connections”/ “Communities” and click on STEP UP.

How do I add profile information?

We also recommend setting up other portions of your profile. Any basic data you add will help to build connections within the community, and you can adjust privacy settings as described above.

  1. Go to Profile (see steps 1-3 of changing your Profile Picture).
  2. Under your profile picture, click the pencil icon next to Contact Details. Update your information as needed and click "Save" at the bottom of the Edit Contact Information popup to save your update.
    • To change your preferred email address, you will have to change it in the APS system. Email STEPUPphysics@aps.org for help.
  3. Adjust any of the following information that you would like to share.
    • Bio: Share information about yourself - your work life and personal interests
    • Education: Share where and when you received your education
    • Professional Associations: Relate your professional memberships here
    • Job History
    • Provide an overview of employment experience
    • Honors and Awards
    • List past accolades and recognition

How do I join/adjust my sub-communities?

STEP UP has 3 open groups that you can join (plus 1 private group for STEP UP Ambassadors).

To join the conversation for the group you originally chose when you signed up for STEP UP, you can click on the "Community Navigator" under "Step Up" at the top of the online community page. This will give you a drop down with the current groups you have joined.

You can also adjust your sub-communities on our Registration Form by adding/removing any groups from the "Community Section" entry at the top of the form. Note - you must be a part of at least one section to save your form. Joining a new sub-community can also take up to 24 hours to take effect, so please be patient if it doesn't let you in immediately.

How do I adjust my email preferences?

There are a few different systems that send emails. See below for how to adjust your preferences for each.

Change your Email (for Login or Receiving Emails):

  • To change your preferred email address, you will have to change it in the APS system. Email STEPUPphysics@aps.org for help.

Online Community Emails (related to discussion threads, etc.)

  1. Go to Profile (see steps 1-3 of changing your Profile Picture).
  2. Click on My Community and Community Notifications.
  3. Here you can adjust your email notifications for each community and sub-community you are a part of. The options are Real Time, Daily Digest, or No Emails. For Weekly Digests, there's a few more steps but you can add posts from any other APS community you're a part of in one weekly email.

    To build your WEEKLY DIGEST:
    1. Head to your Profile (see the right side of the Navigation bar at the top of the page OR the dropdown next to your photo in upper right).
    2. Choose My Account / Community Notifications
    3. Check the box in the right column for each community/sub-community you want to include in the digest. You can then change to "No Email" for that community, quieting your inbox for the rest of the week!
    4. Choose the day of the week for delivery
    5. No need to save - you're all set!

STEP UP Project Emails (newsletter, etc)

  1. Opt-out from the footer of the email, OR email communications@aps.org.

How do I leave the STEP UP community?

If you’d like to be removed from the mailing list & online community, you can unsubscribe on the STEP UP sign up page. There’s an “unsubscribe” box to check at the bottom of the form. Just save and you’ll be removed within 24 hours.
