Get Involved

DPP Pride organizes many activities to build and celebrate our community. Upcoming events will be shared on our e-mail list, our Discord, and our Announcements page.

Please join us at some of our regular events:

APS DPP Meeting Events

  • Each DPP meeting has a formally organized Pride Luncheon featuring a catered meal, field-wide camaraderie, and (oftentimes) some entertaining programming. Tickets must be purchased alongside meeting registration or at the registration desk, pending availability.

  • For one evening during DPP, Pride invites the LGBTQ+ community to join together for a special networking dinner. We try to pick a friendly venue that (a) shows off the local scene, (b) covers many dietary options, and (c) is as accessible as possible.

  • We often host joint events with the Affinity Group Caucus and similar groups. Please keep a look out on our listserv and our Discord as DPP approaches!

Other Meetings in Plasma Physics

Any meeting where LGBTQ+ plasma physicists are present is one where we can get together! Our community has met for meals at OLUG, HTPD, ICOPS, and more. If you're going to a meeting and would like to meet up, please advertise it to our Discord!

Ongoing Activities

  • DPP Pride organizes a Mentoring Program tailored to LGBTQ+ members of the APS DPP community, aimed at professional development and support. Please click the link to get in touch about becoming or finding a mentor.

  • We usually host virtual programming during Pride Month (June) each year. Stay tuned each year for details!

  • We actively collaborate with other affinity group committees, such as W+iPP, CONNECT, the Affinity Group Caucus, and more, on general visibility and engagement efforts such as joint town halls, DPP Allies, and surveys.

  • DPP Pride Luncheon
    Join DPP Pride for our annual luncheon at the DPP meeting in Spokane, WA. Meet fellow LGBT+ plasma physicists and allies over a catered lunch, followed by presentation on being queer in STEM by Prof. Allison Mattheis.  Tickets can be purchased during registration, or at the registration desk on-site. Virtual participation will be available and is free. This event is open to all DPP members, and we encourage allies to join.
    • DPP LGBT+ Networking Dinner
      Join fellow LGBT+ plasma physicists for an informal networking dinner at the DPP meeting in Spokane, WA.  We’ll meet at the registration desks and walk to a local restaurant.  Please bring a method of payment for your dinner. An informal social event for later that week will be planned during the dinner.

    • DPP Pride MagNetUS Networking Happy Hour
      Come to the Green Leafe Cafe (765 Scotland Street) for a happy hour on Thursday, June 9th to get to know your fellow LGBTQ+ plasma physicists! A group will meet outside the poster hall at 5:15 pm and walk over together, or you're welcome to meet us there.

    • DPP Pride Luncheon
      Description:       Join DPP Pride for our first ever luncheon at the DPP meeting in Pittsburgh, PA. Meet fellow LGBT+ plasma physicists and allies over a catered lunch, followed by Q&A with a panel of university, national lab, and student representatives to discuss LGBT+ issues within the plasma physics community.  Tickets can be purchased during registration, or at the registration desk on site. Virtual participation will be available and is free. This event is open to all DPP members, and we encourage allies to join.

    • DPP DEI Booth
      Check out the first-ever Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) booth in the exhibit hall at this year's DPP meeting in Pittsburgh, PA.  The booth is being sponsored by the DPP Pride Committee, Women+ in Plasma Physics, and the DEI Organizing Collective Committee and will highlight DEI activities and events at the DPP meeting, as well as provide general DEI information and opportunities.
