GSCCM Early Career and Student Symposium

We are proud to announce that SCCM-2023 will feature an Early Career and Student Symposium to be held on Sunday, June 18, 2023, just before the start of the SCCM conference. The symposium is open to students, post-docs, and early career researchers who have completed their PhDs within the last 5 years. The symposium will feature a full-day scientific program, including oral presentations, rapid-fire talks, and posters from the participants. There will also be a networking breakfast (provided) and networking lunch (provided), which will be attended by invited researchers from the national labs and academia. Attendants will also be provided with up-to-date job postings throughout the SCCM community. Symposium agenda and details of the virtual component will be posted soon!

Symposium Registration and Financial Assistance

The Early Career and Student Symposium is open to students, post-docs, and other early career scientists who have completed their PhD within the last 5 years. To register for the symposium, please fill out the symposium registration form. Every attendee must complete the registration form. There is no registration fee for the symposium. However, we do encourage attendees to participate in an oral presentation, rapid-fire talk, or poster session.

Different means of financial assistance is available for eligible attendees who are presenting (including posters, rapid fire talks, and oral talks) to cover partial travel costs. Awards will consist of conference registration fee waiver, stipends of various amounts from $200 up to $500 for domestic participants, or $800 for international participants. Awards may also include several nights of hotel accommodations, shared two per room.

To be eligible for financial assistance, participants MUST submit (1) the symposium registration Google form (link above), (2) email a current resume, and (3) email a letter of support from their supervisor. Letters of support should be sent directly from supervisors to Belinda Pacheco and Sakun Duwal. Deadline for travel assistance applications: February 24th, 2023.

A letter of support from a supervisor is required for registrants being considered for a travel award. The letter should convey 1) the supervisor's support for the registrant attending and presenting at the symposium (1-2 sentences), and 2) a brief explanation (2-3 sentences) of the importance/relevance of the registrant’s work to the GSCCM. The letter should be no more than 1 page in length.

Abstract Submission

Abstract Submission The abstract submission for only the Early Career and Student Symposium is found within the symposium Google form link given above. Please note that all symposium presenters are required to submit an abstract for the symposium which is separate from the SCCM conference abstract submission. While you may submit different abstracts to the symposium and conference, you are welcome to submit the same abstract to both.

Please indicate on your abstract submission whether you would prefer to give an oral presentation, rapid-fire talk, or a poster presentation. Oral presentations will be 15 minutes in duration, and due to time constraints, only a limited number of oral presentations can be accommodated. “Rapid-fire” talks will be 5 minutes in duration and will be held at the same time as the poster presentations. Oral presentations and rapid-fire talks will be selected based on technical merit, readability of the abstracts, and relevance to the sorting categories. Deadline for abstract submission: February 10th, 2023.

Symposium Awards

All presentations at the symposium will be judged, and an outstanding oral presentation, rapid-fire talk, and poster presentation will be awarded and recognized during the SCCM conference. Criteria for awards will include both technical/scientific and presentation aspects. Further details coming soon!
