Dr. Maurizio Vretenar, CERN Project Leader, High Technology and Science

Biography:
Dr. Maurizio Vretenar is a senior accelerator physicist and project leader at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland. He earned his PhD in Physics at the University of Trieste (Italy) and joined CERN in 1988 to participate in projects related to design, construction, and operation of linear particle accelerators. After being responsible for the accelerating systems of the CERN hadron linacs, he has been Project Leader for the construction of Linac4, the new linear injector for the CERN accelerator complex commissioned in 2017. Since 2013 he is the coordinator of a series of EU-supported projects to promote innovation for particle accelerators: EuCARD-2, ARIES, and the ongoing I.FAST (Innovation Fostering in Accelerator Science and Technology). More recently, he has been increasingly active in the design of compact accelerators for societal applications, with a particular focus in the medical field where since 2019 he is leading the Next Ion Medical Machine Study (NIMMS), an international collaboration led by CERN to advance cancer therapy with compact ion accelerators.

Abstract:
Particle accelerator technologies are moving out of the scientific laboratories to play an important role in our society, driving medical treatments and industrial processes, and contributing to achieving sustainable development goals. After presenting the main features of accelerators used for applications, the speaker will give an overview of the different domains where accelerators are being commonly used and will finally outline challenges and perspectives for accelerators in the future world.
