PHYSICS MATTERS — On-line Colloquia Series

The PHYSICS MATTERS series, initially featuring pre-recorded videos in 2020 and transitioning to live online events in 2021, has significantly impacted developing communities. By targeting test centers in SESAME project countries and collaborating with local societies and diaspora networks, it aims to enhance access to physics education and knowledge exchange. Open to the public and involving APS FIP members, the series fosters inclusivity and community engagement, empowering developing regions to play an active role in the global physics community.

Christine Darve (ESS), Stephane Kenmoe (University of Duisburg-Essen) and Raïssa Malu
(Investing In People)

Biographies:
Christine Darve is an Engineering Scientist at ESS and before at FNAL and CERN. She is Past-Chair of the FIP, co-founder of the African School of Fundamental Physics and Applications (ASP), Nordic Particle Accelerator Program (NPAP), “Accelerate Your Teaching MOOC” (AYT), and ExCom member of IUPAP, IPIE and several other international organizations.

Stéphane Kenmoe is a researcher at the University of Duisburg-Essen in Germany. He is an also an engager and a practitioner of communication via diverse formats: from science writing to digital mass communication and awareness campaigns. He his the Editor-en-Chef of the African Physics Newsletter (APN) and the FIP Newsletter. He has produced the movie ‘’Science in the City’’ (Science dans la Cité) in Cameroon.

Raïssa Malu is a physicist, by training, from the Democratic Republic of Congo. Since 2014, she has been organizing the Science and Technology Week in D. R. Congo to promote STEM among young people and the public. She is Director of the non-profit association Investing In People, Promoter of Science and Technology Week, Ambassador of the Next Einstein Forum for R. D. C.

Abstract:

The goal of this forum is to introduce digital platforms as scientific tools for developing communities. During this forum, Christine Darve will present selected educational programs to learn on Physics in a nutshell and in particular, particle accelerators as tool for discoveries. Stéphane Kenmoe will then share his perspectives on scientific communication addressing early career African scientists. Raissa Malu, will give further concrete examples on how to Investe In People and to connect science and society. Following those introduction, we will debate on Best Practices to promote digital education and communication in developing communities.
