IMPRESS Scholar-in-Residence Program

Applications are currently being accepted for a 2-week scholar-in-residence experience at Rochester Institute of Technology focusing on qualitative studies of student metacognition. This experience fosters the development of qualitative research methodology, including acquiring and analyzing video data as well as preparing manuscripts for publication. Participants will study undergraduate students in project IMPRESS, an existing two-week lab experience for first-generation and deaf/hard-of-hearing STEM majors that centers on reflective, metacognitive scientific practice. During the day, we will observe and record scientific sessions and/or reflective sessions and then spend evenings analyzing video, identifying themes in student work, and generating research questions. Participants will work with IMPRESS research directors to develop narratives, and mentored in writing so as to leave with significant progress toward a peer-reviewed journal article and engage with IMPRESS undergraduate research students to collect, catalog, and select data. More information on IMPRESS can be found on the program website.

The experience spans the 2-week IMPRESS experience from August 8 to 18. Scholars must commit to arriving in Rochester by Sunday, August 6 to participate in orientation and training in basic videography on Monday, August 7. Participants should plan to depart on Saturday, August 19.

We seek scholars who are familiar with independent research and want to expand their methodological repertoire. Preference will be given to junior faculty, but outstanding applicants from all levels will be considered. Some housing support is available thanks to PERLOC. Interested applicants should contact Scott Franklin.
