Abstract:

The International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) has turned 100 years in 2022! A centennial event has been organised on July 14-18, 2022.

IUPAP is leading fellow scientific unions and other partners to promote and organize an International Year for Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD) in 2022/2023.

This PHYSICS MATTERS forum will gather IUPAP and APS governances, who will discuss their feedback and their critical insights w.r.t the role of Physics in the current international arena.

The panelists are composed of:

Michel SPIRO (IUPAP President)
Silvina Ponce Dawson (IUPAP President designated)
Laura Greene (IUPAP Vice-President at Large and former APS President)
Monica Pepe-Altarelli (IUPAP vice-president)

Biographies:

Michel Spiro is president-elected at IUPAP since 2018 and chairs the steering committee of the International Year of Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development (IYBSSD2022). He is former assistant scientific director in Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), leader of the DAPNIA at CEA, and former president of CERN Council.
Silvina Ponce Dawson is IUPAP President designated and former chair of the Working Group on Women in Physics (WG5). She is Professor at the University of Buenos Aires and Researcher at the Argentinian National Research Council, Senior Associate of the ICTP in Trieste.
Laura Greene is APS former President, and current Chief Scientist at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. She is also IUPAP Vice-President and former chair of the IUPAP Commission on Structure and Dynamics of Condensed Matter (C10). She was appointed to the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).
Monica Pepe-Altarelli is IUPAP Vice-President, CERN physicist in the LHCb collaboration and former LHCb deputy spokesperson. She has been Associate Member Delegate to the EPS Council.
