Nominations open for FIAP Executive Committee

The FIAP Nominating Committee is seeking your assistance in identifying a diverse slate of outstanding candidates to run for leadership positions within the FIAP Executive Committee. Current positions open for nomination:

  • Vice Chair: 4-year term in total (serving for 1 year as a Vice Chair, Chair-Elect, Chair, and Past Chair)
  • Councilor: 4-year term

The Vice Chair will begin their term at the end of the APS March Meeting in 2024, while the Councilor will begin their term on January 1, 2024.

Current officers are listed on the FIAP website, and the officer duties and responsibilities are specified in the Bylaws. The “Chair Line” consists of the Past Chair, Chair, Chair-Elect, and Vice Chair. Briefly, the Vice Chair is responsible for leading the Program Committee which plans the March Meeting program including Industry Day. This is a large task and others in Chair Line provide support. The Councilor represents FIAP and 1-2 other smaller units on the APS Council. The Council meets several times a year, and the Councilor is responsible for keeping FIAP leaders informed about the issues discussed and raising any concerns suggested by the Executive Committee. You can learn more about the Council from this article in APS News.

APS Congressional Fellowship- expanded eligibility - Apply by Dec. 1

Each year an APS member is selected to be a Congressional Science Fellow working in a Congressional office. APS sponsors the fellowship as a public service by making available individuals with scientific knowledge and skills to members of Congress, few of whom have a technical background. In turn, the program enables scientists to broaden their experience through direct involvement with legislative and policymaking processes and to make a difference in the physics community. Fellows serve one year on the staff of a senator, representative, or congressional committee beginning September 2024. Many fellows make connections that allow them to continue careers in science policy or public service.

    Qualifications:
Expanded eligibility: Master’s degree and three years of experience in degree field or science policy or PhD in physics or a closely related field
Demonstrated interest in science policy through academic, community, or professional experience
Currently or previously an engaged member of the APS community; for example, attend APS meetings, publish in APS journals, participate in APS unit activities or APS advocacy efforts, etc.
    US citizenship
APS membership is required to receive an APS fellowship
A competitive stipend is offered in addition to an allowance for relocation, professional travel, and health insurance premiums.

APS News article about Industry Mentoring for Physicists (IMPact)

Finding a physics job in industry can be daunting if your academic resources don’t have industrial experience or useful contacts. APS offers Industry Mentoring for Physicists (IMPact) as a tool to help you find your way. The program, started in 2015, connects students and early-career physicists with industrial physicists. It takes only a few minutes to sign up and get matched with a Mentor who can answer your questions and give you guidance during a few discussions. The system provides search criteria including geography, field of interest, and company. Recently APS News featured an article about how a Mentor helped a student clarify his goals about working in industry.
Are you a physicist with work experience in the private sector?
Interested in becoming a Mentor? It’s also easy for Mentors to sign up at the same link. Check it out and help someone find their path to a rewarding career.

APS has joined the Physics World Jobs partner network to bring you APS Physics Jobs. This new website has an updated format on a new platform. We anticipate this new partnership will result in more job listings across more segments of the physics community, a significant benefit to students and other physicists looking for a new opportunity. There are also benefits for those wishing to post job listings including six free 14-day basic job postings per year, and free 60-day listings for internships or summer placements. Check it out if you’re planning to make a career change, are a hiring manager looking to advertise an opening, or if you’re just interested in what other opportunities might be out there.
