FIAP 2024 Career Lectureship Award: Judith Olson

Judith OlsonThis year the Career Lectureship Award winner is Judith Olson, a Quantum Technology Consultant with more than twelve years experience in atomic clocks and fundamental quantum development at NIST and Cold Quanta. She was recognized for contributions to breakthrough quantum technologies for precision timing and navigation. Judith will give at least three lectures during her term. The presentations will be delivered at a national APS conference, a sectional APS conference, and other venues, such as physics department colloquia.  APS has announced the new APS Fellows for 2024 including six people nominated by FIAP. They will be recognized at the FIAP Business Meeting at the Global Physics Summit in March in Anaheim. Dafine Ravelosona French National Centre for Scientific Research
For pioneering atomic-scale engineering of magnetic materials and spintronic devices, including the use of helium ion irradiation and successfully commercializing this innovative manufacturing process through a start-up company.

Alla Reznik Lakehead University
For pioneering contributions to physics research and impactful industrial applications in radiation medical imaging, advancing the field by successfully translating research results into groundbreaking real-world technologies.

Curt A. Richter National Institute of Standards and Technology
For pioneering studies of nanoelectronic devices based on advanced materials, including semiconducting, molecular, quantum, and topological materials, and for exceptional leadership of the broader nanoelectronics research community across government, industry, and academia.

Lei Zhou Fudan University
For outstanding and sustained contributions to the fields of metamaterials, especially for proposing metasurfaces as a bridge to link propagating waves and surface waves.

Global Physics Summit (March+April Meetings) March 16-21, 2025

You’ve probably already heard multiple times that the Global Physics Summit will combine the March and April meetings in Anaheim March 16-21, 2025. As usual FIAP will host multiple sessions including many organized in cooperation with other units. Look for the full schedule to come out early next year. Plan to attend these sessions to learn about developments in industry and national labs concerning quantum, 2D materials, optics, AI & ML, and CMOS electronics just to name a few of the topics. Of course, there will again be an Industry Day focus including an evening reception, so be sure to get that on your calendar. Early registration is available through January 31, so make your plans now and join your colleagues in sunny (we hope) California for this exciting meeting.

Presentations solicited for the new Industry Room at the Global Physics Summit

In 2025 APS is trying a new way to highlight topics of interest to the private sector. The Industry Room will showcase 45min presentations Mon-Thur during the Global Physics Summit. The organizers are excited to invite you to submit your session topic for consideration in this newly-launched content hub for all topics related to industry and career development at the upcoming APS Global Physics Summit 2025, March 16- 21, in Anaheim, CA.

This is an opportunity to showcase the latest developments, products, solutions, and career insights related to trends within industrial physics. We welcome submissions of presentation topics for consideration that highlight innovations, offer career guidance, or present the latest research, process developments, or other topics related to your field.

Submit Your Topic

Each organization/unit may submit up to two topics (one topic per webform submission). The submission deadline is December 13, selected topics will begin receiving notification on January 8. We encourage thorough proofreading and clarity to maximize engagement.

Ken Hass Outstanding Student Paper Award- nominations due by mid-February

    Every year FIAP awards a $1000 prize for a paper presented by a student (graduate or undergraduate) at the March Meeting. The student nominated for the award must be the lead author of the paper and must present the paper at the APS March meeting, with a subject matter pertinent to applied industrial physics. The nominee must be a student at the time of the submission deadline for the meeting. A letter of nomination from the student’s faculty advisor or industrial/government lab mentor must be received by mid-February, 2025, and self-nominations are not accepted. Students, talk to your advisor/mentor to see if you can be nominated for this award! More information and details at this link.

    APS Releases Refreshed Data Availability Policy for the Physical Review Journals

    APS has a new data availability policy that requires all articles published in the Physical Review journals to include a data availability statement explaining if and where data is available, and strongly encourages authors to share their data publicly. This new policy went into effect Sept. 4 for articles submitted to Physical Review D and PRX Energy, and will take effect for articles submitted to the remaining journals by the end of the year.

    Data availability statements in the Physical Review journals support independent verification of findings — a key part of the scientific process that advances open science publishing practices. Authors with questions about the policy’s implementation or readers who cannot access data for a published article can contact APS’s editorial office.

    Quantum Mentor Opportunity

    The American Physical Society is pleased to announce that we will be featuring 25 mentors in the quantum industry sector in celebration of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. As one of the founding partners, we recognize the profound significance of quantum science, both in its historical contributions and future potential.

    APS would like to highlight mentors from our IMPact Industry Mentoring Program in quantum and increase quantum mentor participation in the program with a focus on career paths, skills, and current research/technology.
