FIAP 2024 election results

The results are in for the annual FIAP election and five officers have been elected. Our thanks to all the candidates who ran, and best wishes to these five who won their elections. Thanks also to the Nominating Committee and Deniz Ertas, the Election Coordinator, for their work to complete the election. 

Vice Chair: Jinghua Guo, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories 

The major responsibility of the Vice Chair is organizing the annual March Meeting / Global Physics Summit program. Jinghua will be responsible for the FIAP program for the 2026 conference in Denver. The Vice Chair progresses each year through Chair Elect, Chair, and Past Chair positions on the FIAP Executive Committee. 

Members-at-Large 

Due to unusual circumstances, four Members-at-Large were elected in 2024. These people serve on the FIAP Executive Committee and fill a variety of roles in awarding prizes, planning the program at the March Meeting / Global Physics Summit, and providing perspective on issues affecting industrial and applied physics. 

Two will serve for three years ending March 2028: 

  • Douglas Bennett, National Institute of Standards and Technology 
  • Alla Reznik, Lakehead University 

Two others will serve for two years ending March 2027: 

  • Cameron Clarke, Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility 
  • Corey Rae McRae, NIST and University of Colorado, Boulder

Global Physics Summit, March 15-21, 2025 Anaheim

It’s almost time for the biggest annual APS meeting, this year a joint conference of the March and April Meetings. Be sure to check out the online schedule and participate in person or virtually. Here’s a few highlights to look for at this year’s conference: 

FIAP Sessions

Maria Longibardi, FIAP Vice Chair, has worked with many others to organize a full program of sessions and events for the FIAP program which includes a strong focus on Quantum topics. There will be 6 invited sessions as well as many other sessions on a variety of topics. You can search for the FIAP sponsored sessions in the online schedule. Here’s the six invited sessions. All will be held in Convention Center Room 201CD

Industry Room

The Industry Room is a place for companies to showcase their innovations and for students and early-career professionals to develop their careers. This is a new program which will feature presentations by industry representatives, panel discussions about industrial careers, and talks by physicists with experience working in industry. All sessions will be held in the Convention Center Room 201AB. You can find a list of the presentations at this link. Hope to see you there! 

QuantumFest

QuantumFest, an extended program in celebration of the International Year of Quantum 

APS is helping to celebrate the International Year of Quantum by partnering with others to hold QuantumFest in conjunction with the GPS. Step into the quantum world. This event unites curious minds, artists, and physicists, from the youngest explorers to the most established scientists worldwide. Designed to inspire and educate, QuantumFest bridges cutting-edge innovation with creative expression, sharing the wonder of quantum science. You can find more details at this link to the program.

Festivities kick off on Saturday March 15, 11am-7pm with Quantum Jubilee. This family-friendly, complimentary event serves as an opportunity open to the public to engage in performances (including aerialists), science demonstrations and flash talks showcasing the wonders of Quantum Physics. LabEscape will also be featured on a smaller scale in the Crystal Lounge; the world’s first science-based “escape room” will be running free mini-missions throughout the entire day! Additional featured appearances include: Nobel Laureate Barry Barish, Le PeTiT CiRqUe, a roaming magician and Youth Physicists. Industry Day Reception

Industry Day reception- MAR-EV34, Convention Center, Katella Terrace 

This annual Thursday event will take place from 6-8PM. It will be held on the Katella Terrace, and all are welcome! Join us for some networking and social time with light refreshments to wrap up Industry Day activities for 2025. There will be brief remarks by some of the organizers and sponsors as well as tables with various topics to support industry-related conversation. More details at this link. Hope to see you there! 

Careers Focus - Meet Your Future, MAR-EV09, Room 201AB

The APS Forum on Industrial and Applied Physics (FIAP) will host a special lunchtime session in which representatives from industry will provide information about physics careers in the private sector. Topics will include research opportunities for physicists in industry, strategies for successfully pursuing industrial jobs, and advice on how to thrive in this exciting and challenging work environment. Refreshments will be served. Join this annual event and get answers to your questions about non-academic career opportunities.

Nominate a deserving colleague as a candidate to be an APS Fellow

Each year FIAP has the privilege of nominating a small number outstanding physicists as candidates to become APS Fellows. Physicists working in the private sector or national labs are often recognized for accomplishments different from those valued in academia. You can learn more about FIAP’s selection process at this link. Consider nominating one of your colleagues who has made substantial contributions to your industry or institution. Please remember to consider candidates who demonstrate the full range of diversity within the APS community. The application process can be accessed at this link (“Start Fellowship Nomination”), and nominations are due by June 2, 2025.

APS Prizes administered by FIAP- nomination deadlines June 2, 2025

FIAP has the privilege of administering two APS prizes:

  1. FIAP Career Lectureship Award (FCLA)
    The purpose of this prize is to recognize physicists in industrial and other non-academic careers and support them in delivering a series of engaging lectures about their careers. Winners of the FIAP Career Lectureship Award (FCLA) will be expected to develop a compelling career lecture and deliver it at different venues during their one-year term. The FCLA includes a $5,000 cash prize award. In addition, APS will provide up to $5,000 in travel support to complete the lecture series. More information at this link.   2. George E. Pake Prize
    This prize recognizes outstanding work by physicists combining original research accomplishments with leadership in the management of research or development in industry. The prize consists of $10,000 and will be presented biennially in even-numbered years. More information at this link. This prize will next be awarded in 2026, and nominations are due by June 2, 2025.
