Highlights of FIAP program at the March Meeting- a personal view

The March Meeting was in Minneapolis March 4-8. FIAP Vice Chair Abram Falk and the organizing committee put together a substantial program and we appreciate their hard work and dedication. A listing of all the sessions sponsored or organized by FIAP can be found here which included the ten Invited Sessions listed below, sharing some with other Units:

B30 Data Science, AI and ML for Industry and Applied Physics (with GDS)
G30 Commercial Applications of Quantum Computing (with DQI)
K30 Quantum Sensing and Information Processing for Biomedical Applications (with DBIO)
M30 Caloric Technologies for Energy-Efficient Refrigeration
N30 Microwave and Optical Physics Applications in Telecommunications
Q30 FIAP Prize Symposium
S30 High performance computing in materials science
T30 What Do Early Career Scientists Do? (with FECS)
T44 Harnessing the Power of Machine Learning in Studying Biomolecular Dynamics (with DBIO)
Y43 Industry, Innovation, and National Security: Finding the Right Balance (with FPS)

In most of the talks the speaker’s remarks were recorded along with images of the slides (but not Y43 which was livestreamed but apparently no recording.) Clicking on the links above will take you to the session Agenda, then click View Recording. You can find other session recordings by clicking on one of these links and then typing the session ID into the Search Agenda box. You must be logged in to APS.org and have registered for the conference to access the recordings.

The major buzz in this conference was Quantum Information Science as evidenced by the large number of sessions on this topic, the large proportion of QIS suppliers in the exhibit hall, and the sizeable crowds outside the doors of many QIS sessions. Certainly an exciting time for this growing branch of physics!

At the risk of offending the many speakers who gave excellent talks, I’ll mention a few talks I particularly enjoyed and two events:

Q30.2 A vision for the next 75 years -- from a transistor to AI enabler Abstract Recording (starts at 34:58) Chih-Yuan Lu, Macronix International, Hisn-Chu, Taiwan
Dr. Lu is the 2024 winner of the George E. Pake Prize He gave an insider’s view of the history of semiconductor structures and processing, ending with thoughts about the future including materials for quantum computing.
G38.4 Gait switching enables body pitch modulation during legged burrowing in granular media

Abstract Recording (starts at 1:00:45) Amber Young, UC Berkeley “Robophysics” was the title of four sessions where living creatures provide the inspiration for robot motion. Many interesting talks, great topics for physics research.

Q30.3 Laser-Material Interactions in Metal Additive Manufacturing Abstract Recording (starts at 1:21:28)
Manyalibo Matthews, Lawrence Livermore National Lab
High speed video of lasers melting a thin powder layer of Ti and Al alloys to make 3-D printed metal objects.
Surprisingly violent interactions, also modeling of melting to help understand voids.

2B Meet Your Future: An Interactive Panel on Industry Careers Abstract An annual event led by Crystal Bailey, the Head of APS Careers. A panel of physicists working in the private sector share their experiences and answer many audience questions about nonacademic career paths. Unfortunately, no recording, but plan to attend next year!

5A Industry Day Reception Abstract FIAP and a number of cosponsors hosted this event on Thursday evening. Great networking opportunity, made more congenial with finger food and beverages. We’ll do it again in Anaheim in 2025

Free 60-day listings for internships or summer placements on the APS Jobs Board

Do you have an internship, REU, or Fellowship opening in your company, lab, or institute? Soon it will be time to recruit for summer 2024, and the APS Physics Jobs Center is an ideal place to advertise to an audience of physics students. Better yet, there’s no charge! It’s easy to list your position, just submit the information at this link

Undergraduate and graduate students can find existing openings at this link. Career counselors highly recommend an internship as an excellent way to check out areas where students might want to work. Take a look and see if you can find the next step in your path to a physics career! Note: REU = Research Experience for Undergraduates

Nominate a deserving colleague as a candidate to be an APS Fellow

Each year FIAP has the privilege of nominating a small number outstanding physicists as candidates to become APS Fellows. Physicists working in the private sector or national labs are often recognized for accomplishments different from those valued in academia. You can learn more about FIAP’s selection process at this link. Consider nominating one of your colleagues who has made substantial contributions to your industry or institution. Please remember to consider candidates who demonstrate the full range of diversity within the APS community. The application process is found at this link, and nominations are due by June 3, 2024. APS Prizes administered by FIAP- nomination deadlines in June

FIAP has the privilege of administering two APS prizes:

  1. FIAP Career Lectureship Award (FCLA) The purpose of this prize is to recognize physicists in industrial and other non-academic careers and support them in delivering a series of engaging lectures about their careers. Winners of the FIAP Career Lectureship Award (FCLA) will be expected to develop a compelling career lecture and deliver it at different venues during their one-year term. The FCLA includes a $5,000 cash prize award. In addition, APS will provide up to $5,000 in travel support to complete the lecture series. More information at this link. Nominations due by June 3, 2024.
  2. George E. Pake Prize This prize recognizes outstanding work by physicists combining original research accomplishments with leadership in the management of research or development in industry. The prize consists of $10,000 and will be presented biennially in even-numbered years. More information at this link. This prize will next be awarded in 2026, so nominations are due by June 2, 2025.

Former FIAP Chair Ernesto Marinero recognized by National Academy of Inventors

FIAP has benefitted from the leadership of many outstanding physicists with experience in the private sector. One of these is Ernesto Marinero who was the FIAP Chair in 2011 while he was a Research Staff Member at Hitachi GST, a major manufacturer of hard disk drives. He started his career at the IBM Almaden Research Center. He joined the faculty of Purdue University in 2013 where his research program focuses on nanomaterials and devices for applications in low power, ultrafast magnetic-based computational hardware and the development of future high-capacity and -performance solid-state batteries for transportation electrification. He was recently named a fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (link) in recognition of his work which includes more than 100 patents issues worldwide. Congratulations Ernesto!
