DCOMP Early Career Office Hours

The Division of Computational Physics (DCOMP) is excited to launch a new outreach initiative aimed at supporting early career researchers who are considering paths outside of academia.

As part of this effort, we’re introducing a series of informal, one-hour virtual “office hour” events featuring researchers who have successfully transitioned into careers in industry.

🎤 What to Expect:

Each session will spotlight two speakers who will share their journeys from academia to industry, discuss their current roles, and offer practical advice for navigating the transition. The sessions will also include open Q&A segments, giving attendees the opportunity to ask questions and gain candid insights into non-academic career paths. As part of the Office Hour series, we are hosting invited speakers from leading organizations including LIFT, Meta, Siemens, Cooley, Terray, NIST, and others.

First session speakers:

Li Li

Li is currently a Software Engineer at Meta, where he works on machine learning applications, with a focus on recommendation systems. He has over 10 years of experience in the field, spanning research, competitive achievements, and real-world deployments. Li completed his Ph.D. at UC Irvine in 2016 and subsequently transitioned into industry, first joining Google and later Meta.



Marc D. Dvorak

Marc is currently a Staff Scientist in the Device Modeling group at HRL Laboratories, where he focuses on the theory and simulation of exchange-only spin qubits. He joined HRL approximately three years ago, following a postdoctoral position at Aalto University in Helsinki, where he worked on electronic structure theory.

  • The initiative is free and open to everyone. However we warmly encourage participants to become members of the Division of Computational Physics of the APS (DCOMP) to further support our community and benefit from continued involvement in its activities (APS Student Members may select up to two divisions and/or topical groups free of charge.
