Nominations

The executive committee is holding elections this year to improve our communication with you the members and our efforts for the greater physics community. This year, five executive committee member positions are open for nominations. These include:

  • Chair-Elect (3-year term)
  • Secretary (2-year term)
  • Members-at-Large (x2) (2-year term)
  • Communications Officer (2-year term)

Elected candidates will begin their terms on January 1, 2025. An open house will be held by the current executive committee to answer questions about the election and positions virtually through zoom.

As a reminder, a complete nomination consists of a 800 character bio, 800 character candidate statement, and headshot. Self-nominations are encouraged!

Description of Executive Committee Positions

In the 2024 APS FECS Executive Committee elections, the highlighted positions are open for nominations (self nominations highly encouraged). A brief summary of past & current efforts of the Executive Committee can be found here.

  • The Chair shall have overall responsibility for the operation of the Forum and shall preside over all meetings of the Executive Committee at which they can attend. (1 year)
  • Chair-Elect shall assist the Chair when needed and serve as Chair when the Chair is absent.  The Chair-Elect chairs the Program Committee for the APS annual meetings. (1 Year) . A person is elected as chair elect and expected to spend 3 years on the Executive Committee progressing in the Chair line (elect > Chair > past) 
  • Past Chair shall assist the chair line with institutional memory. The Past Chair shall serve as the Chair of the Nominating Committee for the annual elections. (1 year)
  • Forum Councilor shall serve as a liaison between the APS Council and the Executive Committee. Following each Council meeting, the Forum Councilor shall report to the Executive Committee of the Forum regarding actions taken by the Council that affect the status and operations of the Forum. (4 years)
  • Secretary shall maintain the records of the Forum including minutes of Executive Committee meetings. The Secretary shall distribute the minutes to each member of the Executive Committee.  The Secretary shall notify the Chair of matters requiring Executive Committee action. The Secretary shall run the annual election.  With the Communication Officer the Secretary will inform membership, the APS Corporate Secretary, candidates, and Forum executive of the results.  (2 years)
  • Communication Officer will work closely with the Secretary to relay information between the Executive Committee and the membership.  The Communication Officer is responsible for the newsletter. They may appoint a non-voting newspaper editor if desired.  The officer will be responsible for all promotional items for FECS and with the approval of the executive, should keep these items stocked.  The Communication Officer shall maintain the FECS APS web pages and any other web presence the Executive Committee believes is important.   • Treasurer shall maintain the financial records of the Forum and report the current state of the finances at Executive meetings.  The Treasurer shall co-approve any Forum expenses with one person from the chair line, usually the Chair, unless they is claiming the expenses. In consultation with the Chair line, the Treasurer shall present an annual budget when asked by the Executive Committee. (2 years)
  • International Affairs Officer will develop activities at the International level that promote early career scientists globally. The International Affairs Officer shall work in consultation with the APS Director of International Affairs on these activities. (3 years) 
  • Members-at-Large help run the Forum and make up most of the standing committees within the executive. (2 years)

Nominees for and holders of APS Honors (prizes, awards, and fellowship) and official leadership positions are expected to meet standards of professional conduct and integrity as described in the APS Ethics Guidelines. Violations of these standards may disqualify people from consideration or lead to revocation of honors or removal from office.
