March Meeting in Baltimore, March 13-18

We are looking forward to seeing you in Baltimore.
We want to highlight these items:

DPOLY Reception, Sunday, 5 - 8 pm.
We welcome you to start the week with a fun reunion at the DPOLY reception at the Pratt Street Ale House (206 W. Pratt St.) across from the convention center. The DPOLY reception celebrates Anna Balazs and Thomas Epps, winners of the Polymer Physics Prize and the Dillon Medal, respectively.

Short Course: Polymer Nanocomposites, March 12-13
Pinar Akcora, Russell Composto, and Rohan Hule organized this year’s course: “Polymer Nanocomposites: Challenges and Opportunities.”

Talks and Posters.
Thanks to the program committee (chaired by Dvora Perahia) and to all DPOLY members for a full program.
North American members should have received your program booklet already in the mail; it is also available online.
DPOLY members from overseas may pick up their hard copy booklets at the membership table.

Student Lunch with Experts, Rachel Segalman and Pieter in ‘t Veld. See details in the Program booklet.

DPOLY Awards Symposia, Tuesday. See details in the Program booklet.

DPOLY Business Meeting, Tuesday, 5:45 pm, room 336.
Updates and news on membership, awards and other issues. Please email steven.hudson@nist.gov if you have items for our agenda. Thanks.

NSF Q&A Session, Tuesday, 6:45 pm, Room 336.

Poster Session, Wednesday, 11:00 am - 2:00 pm in Exhibit Hall A.

Industry Day (Wednesday) sponsored by DPOLY and FIAP will focus on industrial applications. Invited, contributed and focus sessions convey physics from nano to meso.

Volunteers Needed

DPOLY Membership Table, Monday - Wednesday. Please volunteer for a one or two hour time slot (8am -5pm) at the membership table. Volunteers will sign up new DPOLY members, distribute program booklets to new and international members, and give away new DPOLY logo magnets. It’s a great way to meet people!

To sign up:

  • Click this link to go to our invitation page on VolunteerSpot
  • Enter your email address: (You will NOT need to register an account on VolunteerSpot)
  • Sign up! Choose your spots - VolunteerSpot will send you an automated confirmation and reminders. Easy!

Pochan and Loo Win DPOLY Election

Darrin Pochan was elected the new Vice Chair and Lynn (Yueh-Lin) Loo was elected the new Member at Large of the Executive Committee. We enthusiastically look forward to their service to the division. We also thank Al Crosby and Marina Guenza for standing for election. (20.3% of DPOLY membership participated in the election. Thank you.)

New Fellows

DPOLY welcomes the following new fellows:

Chen, Jeff (University of Waterloo): For outstanding contributions to the theoretical study of wormlike polymer chains, in particular, spatially inhomogeneous and orientationally ordered bulk and confined systems.

Crosby, Alfred (University of Massachusetts, Amherst): For establishing a research program on nature-inspired materials that has gained a worldwide reputation while making a significant and broad impact on the fields of materials science, mechanics, and biology.

Leger, Liliane (College de France): For masterfully pioneering experiments about the fundamentals of polymer diffusion, adhesion, and rheological flow.

Migler, Kalman (National Institute of Standards and Technology): For definitive optical and rheological experiments concerning the physics of polymer flow to identify slippage and multiphase behavior.

Raphael, Elie (ESPCI ParisTech): For outstanding contributions to the theory of complex fluids, including polymers at interfaces, polyelectrolytes, wetting of thin films, and capillary-gravity waves.

Roland, Charles Michael (Naval Research Laboratory): For important experimental contributions and physical insight into the temperature and pressure dependence of the dynamics of polymeric systems.

Segalman, Rachel (University of California, Santa Barbara): For pioneering contributions to the understanding of conjugated, polypeptoid, and ion-containing polymers and co-polymers.
