November 3 – 5, 2023

The Executive Committee of the APS Mid-Atlantic Section (MAS) is pleased to announce that the Section will be holding its annual meeting MAS23 fully in-person on the campus of University of Delaware from November 3 to 5, 2023 starting 2:00pm on Friday, November 3.

Established in 2013, the objective of APS MAS is to engage and strengthen the physics community in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, as well as to aid APS in its mission to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics at the regional level. The section serves the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Graduate and undergraduate students are especially welcome and encouraged to attend and submit an abstract for presentation. The meeting includes plenary and parallel sessions covering a broad range of current topics in physics research, a student poster session, and a graduate program fair.

ABSTRACTS

Abstract submission has closed on Wednesday, October 11.

We are asking for abstracts in all areas of physics and physics education. Please share your research by contributing an oral and/or a poster presentation.

Email abs-help@aps.org to contact APS Abstract Help Line.

INFORMATION FOR PRESENTERS

Note that you MUST register to present at the meeting.

ORAL PRESENTATIONS

Oral speakers will present live to an in-person audience. Prepare a graphically rich presentation of your research, highlighting both the main points and the most interesting details.

Allotted times for

  • Contributed talks are 12 minutes (10 minutes to present and 2 minutes for Q&A).
  • Invited talks are 36 minutes (30 minutes to present and 6 minutes for Q&A).
  • Plenary talks are 60 minutes (50 minutes to present and 10 minutes for Q&A).

Bring your slides in PDF or PPTX format on a flash drive. Arrive at least 15 minutes before your session starts and test the presentation on the meeting laptop. Inivted speakers (and others in exceptional cases) may use their own device if tested in advance with the projector in the room of the presentation.Only HDMI is available to connect your device; please bring an adapter if your device does not feature HDMI.

Follow the directions of the session chair and adhere to your allotted time strictly. Practice beforehand to ensure a smooth and timely delivery of your presentation. Prepare to answer short questions from the audience as moderated by the session chair.

POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Each poster must have a presenter. Posters must be no larger than 42 inches (W) x 36 inches (H) (landscape format). Presenters must set up poster on the assigned board at least 60 minutes prior to the start of the poster session, and for the duration of the poster session. Poster presenters need to prepare a 5-min talk to help attendees navigate the presented work. Poster presenters are required to stand by the poster during the scheduled poster session to answer questions from attendees. Presenters may remove their posters immediately after the poster session or leave them there for further display as according to the instructions of the meeting organizer.

DIRECTIONS AND NEARBY

Arriving via Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) or Philadelphia International (PHL) airports will be similarly convenient. PHL is approximately one hour north while BWI is about one hour and 15 minutes south of the I-95 exits to campus. Choose travel to/from the airport that best suits your flight times and finances.

Two train services are available to bring you to Delaware from PHL: SEPTA (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) and Amtrak. Both rails arrive at the same station in Wilmington, DE, but have different costs. Amtrak train service runs full service to Wilmington, DE with limited service directly to Newark, DE.

For travel from the airports or train stations, we suggest Delaware Express – call 800.648.5466 or visit. Delaware Express' one-way shuttle from PHL ($45 without tip) is significantly less expensive than the shuttle from BWI ($138 WITH tip and tolls) due to their expanded fleet for the PHL-UD run. Mention that you are a UD student for an approximate 5% discount. You do not need to show an ID to get this discount.

There are several rental car companies located near campus: Hertz and Enterprise.

Uber and Lyft are also widely available in the area.

NEARBY (Things to do + Activities)

Newark is the third largest city in Delaware and home to the University of Delaware. Our award-winning downtown received the honor of becoming a Great American Main Street winner in 2011. We have over 17 miles of trails and 33 parks totaling over 650 acres of parkland that include the Newark Reservoir. The James F. Hall Trail is a part of the East Coast Greenway, a developing trail system, spanning nearly 3,000 miles as it winds its way between Canada and Key West, linking all the major cities of the eastern seaboard.

Greater Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley are just a short distance from all points in the Mid-Atlantic region and minutes off the I-95 corridor. While we are close to so many – ideal for a quick weekend getaway – you will feel as if you have been transported to a different land. The rolling hills and magnificent estates of Chateau country recall the French countryside. The colonial hamlets, of Old New Castle and Historic Odessa, untouched by time, give you the feeling of an English country village. And our six grand gardens, all part of America's Garden Capital, encompass over 3,000 acres and lie within minutes of one another.

Meeting Parking

All parking lots and garages on campus utilize the Passport Parking App.
