2023 Annual Meeting of the APS Mid-Atlantic Section

November 3 – 5, 2023

The Executive Committee of the APS Mid-Atlantic Section (MAS) is pleased to announce that the Section will be holding its annual meeting MAS23 fully in-person on the campus of University of Delaware from November 3 to 5, 2023 starting 2:00pm on Friday, November 3.

Established in 2013, the objective of APS MAS is to engage and strengthen the physics community in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, as well as to aid APS in its mission to advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics at the regional level. The section serves the District of Columbia, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia.

Graduate and undergraduate students are especially welcome and encouraged to attend and submit an abstract for presentation. The meeting includes plenary and parallel sessions covering a broad range of current topics in physics research, a student poster session, and a graduate program fair.

LOCATION

The MAS meeting will take place in three buildings of the Main Campus of the University of Delaware (UD) in Newark DE:

• Smith Hall, 18 Amstel Avenue (Get Directions): check-in (2 pm) and plenary session (3 pm) on Friday, Nov 03
• Gore Hall, 114 The Green (Get Directions): all parallel sessions on all meeting days, between 5 pm, Friday, Nov 03 to 1 pm, Sunday, Nov 05
• Harker ISE Lab, 221 Academy Street (Get Directions): poster session, Saturday Nov 04

UD Shuttle
UD operates a free bus shuttle with a few routes. The bus shuttle may be convenient for some participants to commute between their hotel and the meeting venues: https://udshuttle.doublemap.com/map/

Closest Parking to Smith and Gore Hall is the Trabant University Center Garage or street parking if available.
Closest Parking to ISElab is the Perkins Student Center Garage or street parking if available.

The early registration period ends Friday, October 13 at 11:59 PM EDT. Thereafter the regular rates apply. The regular registration will close on Wednesday, October 25 at 11:59 PM EDT. This will be the last opportunity to register for attendance.

There will be no late registration, and on-site registrations will not be available. If you plan to attend MAS23, please register before it closes.

We are asking for abstracts in all areas of physics and physics education. Please share your research by contributing an oral and/or a poster presentation.

DIRECTIONS AND NEARBY

Arriving via Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) or Philadelphia International (PHL) airports will be similarly convenient. PHL is approximately one hour north while BWI is about one hour and 15 minutes south of the I-95 exits to campus. Choose travel to/from the airport that best suits your flight times and finances.

Two train services are available to bring you to Delaware from PHL: SEPTA (South Eastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority) and Amtrak. Both rails arrive at the same station in Wilmington, DE, but have different costs. Amtrak train service runs full service to Wilmington, DE with limited service directly to Newark, DE.

For travel from the airports or train stations, we suggest Delaware Express – call 800.648.5466 or visit. Delaware Express' one-way shuttle from PHL ($45 without tip) is significantly less expensive than the shuttle from BWI ($138 WITH tip and tolls) due to their expanded fleet for the PHL-UD run. Mention that you are a UD student for an approximate 5% discount. You do not need to show an ID to get this discount.

There are several rental car companies located near campus: Hertz and Enterprise.

Uber and Lyft are also widely available in the area.

NEARBY (Things to do + Activities)

Newark is the third largest city in Delaware and home to the University of Delaware. Our award-winning downtown received the honor of becoming a Great American Main Street winner in 2011. We have over 17 miles of trails and 33 parks totaling over 650 acres of parkland that include the Newark Reservoir. The James F. Hall Trail is a part of the East Coast Greenway, a developing trail system, spanning nearly 3,000 miles as it winds its way between Canada and Key West, linking all the major cities of the eastern seaboard.

Greater Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley are just a short distance from all points in the Mid-Atlantic region and minutes off the I-95 corridor. While we are close to so many – ideal for a quick weekend getaway – you will feel as if you have been transported to a different land. The rolling hills and magnificent estates of Chateau country recall the French countryside. The colonial hamlets, of Old New Castle and Historic Odessa, untouched by time, give you the feeling of an English country village. And our six grand gardens, all part of America's Garden Capital, encompass over 3,000 acres and lie within minutes of one another.

Scope of the Meeting

This regional APS meeting will cover all areas of physics, such as the latest advances in astrophysics and astroparticle physics, atomic and molecular and optical physics, biophysics, machine learning, solid-state physics, magnetism, quantum and 2D materials, physics education, and other subfields of physics. A more complete list is given by the sorting categories for abstract submission.

Contributions by physicists at all career levels are welcome, including graduate and undergraduate students. Participation is not restricted to the Mid-Atlantic region, and participants from other regions and countries are welcome. We especially welcome diversity among the meeting participants and encourage every person interested in physics to participate.

Student Travel Award

The student travel award is in the amount of $300.
Students who are eligible to apply for the travel award must:

1. be the first author of the oral or poster presentation;
2. present their research in person at MAS23;
3. justify why the travel support is needed for attending MAS23.

Please note that ONLY ONE application is allowed from each advisor.

In the letter of support, the advisor must state:

1. the applicant is in good standing as an undergraduate or a graduate researcher;
2. why the travel support is needed;
3. how the attendance of the annual meeting will benefit the applicant’s academic goals.

Early Career Travel Award

The early career travel award is in the amount of $500.

Eligibility for the Early Career Travel Award:

1. received a PhD degree within the past 10 years;
2. postdoctoral researcher or at the rank of Assistant Professor;
3. present an invited talk at MAS23;
4. justify why the travel support is needed for attending MAS23.
