Deadline for nominations for open Forum for Early Career Scientists (FECS) positions has been extended to Friday, September 24.

Thank you for your continuing support of FECS. In these uncertain times, we continue to promote the interests of early career scientists at the APS and within our community. This notice opens the nomination period for elections to the FECS Executive Committee for terms beginning in 2022.

This year, five positions are open for nomination. This includes a call for FECS’ first elected Councilor—a position that represents FECS interests to the APS Council, which is one of the top decision-making bodies for the APS. Over the past few years, we have been represented by LaNell Williams, the councilor for the FGSA, who has done a great job on behalf of FECS.

FECS is committed to a diverse and well-qualified executive committee that can best represent and apply the interests of FECS members. In considering nominations for the executive committee, we place due consideration to the meetings (March, April, Divisional) that the nominee can attend, as there is a desire to have FECS well represented at all APS meetings. Apart from being a FECS member, there are no restrictions on nominations, and self-nominations are allowed and encouraged.

This year, the Chair-Elect position, the Treasurer position, the Forum Councilor position, and two (2) Member-at-Large positions are up for nomination. A short description of these positions is printed below. Depending on the position, one should expect to spend an average of 5 to 10 hours per month in performance of their duties. This form gives further instructions for nominations and is located under the governance section on the FECS website. The deadline for submission is Friday, September 24. Once nominations have been made, the election committee, chaired by the past chair, will begin the selection process and elections will start soon after. Details for voting will be given once the election process begins.

We hope that you take the time to make a nomination for these important positions and thank you again for your support. If you have questions about the positions, please feel free to contact Past Chair Ben Ueland or another executive committee member through Engage.

Sincerely,

FECS Executive Committee
