Report

Report: Fall 2017 OSAPS Meeting at Miami University, Oxford, OH

The meeting was held in the physics department at Miami University on October 13-14, 2017 in conjunction with the Southern Ohio Section of the AAPT. The theme of the meeting was “Quantum Information”, which was highlighted by four invited speakers. One additional invited speaker was invited by the SOS/AAPT. A total of 167 attendees registered for the meeting and 90 presentations were given.

OSAPS Fall 2017 Meeting Registration: High School Teacher:4, Junior Member:1, Student Non-Member:39, Retired member:4, Member:39, Undergraduate:40, Non-member:24, Student Member:16. OSAPS Fall 2017 Meeting Presentations: Posters:54, Contributed Talks:31, Invited Talks:5.

After brief welcoming remarks by the President of Miami University, Dr. Gregory Crawford, the 1st plenary session kicked off on Friday October 13 with an invited talk “Optimized measurements of states of light at low powers for communications”, by Professor F. Elohim Becerra from the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque. This was followed by a 2nd plenary talk entitled “The final steps toward neutral atom quantum computers – all you need is light”, by Professor Katharina Gillen-Christandl from Cal Poly State University, Obispo. Participants were then given an open-house tour of all the research labs and facilities in the physics department at Miami University. The lab tours were followed by poster presentations, arranged in three parallel sessions, focusing on Optical Sensing, Condensed Matter, and Applied Physics. The 1st day of the meeting concluded with a banquet and after-dinner plenary talk, intriguingly entitled “What if…?”, given by Professor Shohini Ghose from Wilfrid Laurier University, Canada.

The 2nd day of the meeting, on Saturday Oct 14, started with the contributed talks, arranged in four parallel oral sessions, focusing on Quantum optics and quantum information, Photonics and nanoscience, Optics and astrophysics, and Physics education. This was followed by the 4th plenary talk for the meeting – this talk was sponsored by the SOS/AAPT – “Explicit content and spoilers: What we know about solving problems”, by Professor Tom Fisher from Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville. The final plenary talk was delivered by Professor Benjamin Schumacher from Kenyon University, entitled “Quantum flows of Probability and Heat”. The conference received financial support from OSAPS, Miami’s College of Arts and Science, and the Physics Department.

The local organizing committee consisted of Professors Jennifer Blue (SOS/AAPT), Perry Rice, and Samir Bali (Chair). Major administrative support was provided by Ms. Teresa Kolb in the front office of the Miami University physics department.

Need for Nominations for OSAPS Executive Committee

OSAPS will conduct elections during the first part of 2018 for several upcoming vacancies on the Executive Committee:

  • Vice Chair
  • Member-at-Large
  • Student Member-at-Large

Please consider running for one of these important positions, or nominating candidates whom you believe would do a great job. We depend on our members to help with this! Nominations should be sent to a member of the OSAPS Nominations Committee: A. Roy Day, Petru Fodor, Mathew Mircovich, or Snjezana Balaz.

Honors and Awards Committee News

After consecutive 26 years of service, Bob Hengehold (AFIT, retired) is stepping down as Chair of the OSAPS Honors and Awards Committee. We want to thank and congratulate Bob on his tremendous work at identifying many excellent and deserving awardees. The two prestigious awards of the section are:

Howard Maxell Award: for Distinguished Service to the Ohio-Region Section of the American Physical Society is presented to those members of the Section who have rendered outstanding service to the Section.

William Fowler Award: for Distinguished Research in Physics is to honor those members of the Society with appreciable connections to the State of Ohio at some time in their life, who have done outstanding research in physics.

Bob will be replaced as Chair by Mike Crescimanno (Youngstown State U).

The Maxwell Award will be presented to Fred Trexler (Spring Arbor University, retired) at the upcoming Michigan State Meeting in April. Fred is being honored for his service on the Executive Committee as Membership Chair as well as his efforts in working with the APS to set up on-line elections for the Section and his continued management of these elections since their inception.

I hope that you will join the work of the committee this year by nominating your colleagues who exemplify the spirit of these awards! Just e-mail the name of the person you are nominating to anyone on the OSAPS awards committee (Scott Lee and Mike Crescimanno), Chair and we'll do the rest. Alternatively, you can send any questions you have about the awards to the committee and we'll answer you as soon as we can. Thank you in advance for your nominations!

Help Spread the Word About OSAPS

Not all APS members living in the Ohio Region (Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana) are OSAPS members. Talk to your colleagues and let them know that membership in OSAPS is free and allows the section to continue in its efforts of providing quality meetings and active communications with its members through mailings, newsletters, and email. OSAPS offers physicists the opportunity to attend multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss important research with your colleagues within the region, and it provides an excellent opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to present their research results. As most members reside or work in this area, participation in sectional meetings has the additional benefit of the economy; this is particularly important for students. To join OSAPS, go to http://www.aps.org/membership/services/ or contact a Membership Representative at 301-209-3280.
