Fall 2016 Meeting of the OSAPS at Bowling Green State University

The OSAPS Fall 2016 meeting “Materials for Energy and Sustainability” was organized by Professor Mikhail Zamkov and held at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) on October 7-8 2016. The theme of the meeting was the fundamental research that enables innovative processes and materials for the sustainable production of energy, electricity, and fuels. The conference highlighted recent discoveries in physics, chemistry and related disciplines presented by researchers from Ohio and neighboring states.

On Friday October, 7, Dr. Leonard Brillson from the Ohio State University presented “Spatially-resolved photophysics of nanostructured materials and their interfaces.” Dr. Richard Schaller, representing Argonne National Laboratory and Northwestern University, continued the theme with “Spectroscopic Measurement of Electronic and Thermal Interconversion in Energy-Relevant Materials.” The third speaker, Professor Preston Snee, from University of Illinois at Chicago, gave an exciting talk titled, “Quantum Dots: from Fundamental Science to Curing Cancer.” The session continued with the presentation by Dr. Xuan Gao from Case Western Reserve University who talked about “Imaging Long Transport Lengths of Photo-generated Carriers in Oriented Organometal Halide Perovskite Films.” Dr. Eric Stinaff from Ohio University closed Friday’s invited talks with interesting discoveries in the field of 2D semiconductors. His talk was titled “Opto-electronic studies of two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides.”

Brillson Presentation

The scientific program continued with a poster session where 63 researchers presented their scientific results in different disciplines of physics. The poster session was accompanied by expositions and workshops presented by sponsors of the Fall OSAPS meeting. The first day of the conference ended with an impressive talk entitled “Skunky Beer in a whole new Light” by the Director of the Center for Photochemical Sciences Dr. Malcolm Forbes who explained the science behind the brewing process of this popular beverage.

Poster Session

The meeting continued Saturday morning with contributed paper sessions divided in three subsessions: Novel Materials for Energy and Environment, Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Research, and Photonics, Nanoscience and Photochemistry. The audience attended a total of 43 presentations including an invited talk by Dr. Remi Beaulac from Michigan State University “Nitroxide Radicals as Efficient Hole Extractors for Photoexcited Colloidal Quantum Dots.”

The OSAPS 2016 Fall meeting united students, professors and industry workers from the midwest region. Researchers who work in different fields had a great opportunity to present and discuss novel exciting discoveries and technologies in physics and related disciplines. The friendly and professional atmosphere helped create collaborations and partnerships.

Spring 2016 Meeting of OSAPS, University of Dayton

The 2016 Spring Meeting of OSAPS was held at the University of Dayton on Friday, April 8th and 9th. This meeting was also a joint meeting with the Southern Ohio Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). The theme for the meeting was “Nanophotonics II”, with the II referencing the last time UD hosted an OSAPS meeting in 2005 with the theme “Nanophotonics”.

Friday was the kickoff of the meeting, which started with a student mixer sponsored by the UD chapter of Society of Physics Students. Approximately 18 students enjoyed a free pizza lunch, and Prof. Willie Rockward, National President of Sigma Pi Sigma, gave a talk on careers in physics. In the first plenary session, UD Provost Dr. Paul Benson gave a warm welcome to our fellow scientists, and then Dr. Ronald M. Reano from The Ohio State University gave an exciting talk titled, “Corralling photons: controlling light in optical waveguides on the chip-scale”.

The second plenary session featured UD’s own Prof. Joseph Haus, who continued the theme with “Optics with metals: Novel and future developments”. Next, the students took the spotlight with the poster session, which featured 31 posters on a wide range of physics topics. The Friday agenda ended with an excellent banquet dinner with 98 attending, followed by a well-received (but decidedly nontraditional) talk by UD’s Prof. Robert Brecha titled “Let’s talk about religion, politics…and physics”.

The meeting continued on Saturday, starting with the contributed talks, most of which were presented by OSAPS students. We had five parallel sessions featuring 26 talks, including one joint session with AAPT that was focused on physics education. Additionally, AAPT held a memorial session, hosted by Dr. Gordon Aubrecht from Ohio State University at Marion, celebrating the contributions of Prof. James F. Sullivan, who was a retired faculty member from University of Cincinnati.

The final plenary session of the meeting featured two speakers. First, Prof. Natalia Litchinitser from the University of Buffalo presented an excellent talk titled “Complex light in linear and nonlinear complex media”. Our final plenary talk was given by Dr. Tim Bunning, Chief Scientist of the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate at Air Force Research Laboratory. His talk titled “Nanophotonic activities within AFRL/RX” highlighted many of the research efforts at AFRL over the past decade.

The OSAPS Spring 2016 meeting had 117 attendees total. Many of these were students or faculty from colleges and universities around the Ohio Region, but there were also a number of attendees who are retired or work in industry. This diversity in attendance demonstrates the impact that OSAPS has regionally and gives the students opportunities to connect and network with people outside their normal sphere of influence. Overall, the OSAPS 2016 Spring Meeting was a great success, and we look forward to seeing you at the next OSAPS meeting!

Chair: Assoc. Prof. Mo Ahoujja, Ph.D.

Assistants: Assist. Prof. Jay Mathews, Ph.D., Prof. Emeritus Perry Yaney, Ph.D.

Need for Nominations

OSAPS will conduct elections during the first part of 2017 for several upcoming vacancies on the Executive Committee:

  • Vice Chair
  • Treasurer
  • Student Member-At-Large

Please consider running for one of these important positions, or nominating candidates whom you believe would do a great job. We depend on our members!

Upcoming Vote on OSAPS By-Law Changes

Due to recent revisions to the corporate structure of the American Physical Society, it is necessary to revise the By-Laws of the Ohio-region Section to bring them in compliance with the new structure. The Executive Committee has consulted with APS, considered a series of suggested modifications, and endorsed a new version of the OSAPS By-Laws. That new version was approved by the APS Council in November.

The OSAPS Executive Committee plans to bring the revised By-Laws before the membership so that a vote for approval can be conducted. That vote will occur during our regular election in the first part of 2017.

The revised By-Laws can be viewed on the OSAPS Governance web page.

Congressional Visits on Capitol Hill

The Ohio-Regions’s own Snjezana "Snow" Balaz, current Chair-Elect of OSAPS, participated in APS’s Congressional Visit Day on Jan. 25, 2016, in Washington D.C. Representing Ohio, she met with staffers of Sen. Sherrod Brown, Sen. Rob Portman and Dr. Jahanmir, who works with Congressman Tim Ryan. There were 53 APS members representing 24 states that participated.

Remembering Gordon Aubrecht

Gordon Aubrecht, a long-time positive presence with the OSAPS, passed away Nov. 21, 2016. He served the OSAPS in numerous capacities over many years, including vice-chair, chair, and past-chair during the years 1997-2000, and was co-organizer/host for both the Fall 2001 OSAPS meeting at Columbus State University and the Spring 2012 OSAPS meeting at The Ohio State University. He received the Howard Maxwell Award in recognition of distinguished service to the section in Spring 2004, and was serving as APS Council Observer for the section at the time of his death. His distinguished career included fellowship in APS, AAPT, and AAAS. Ohio State U – Marion, where he was professor of physics, has established a fund to name a lab in his honor in the new physics and engineering building rising on the campus. Those interested in this effort, information can be found on the OSU Marion Aubrecht news page.

Help Spread the Word About OSAPS

Not all APS members living in the Ohio Region (Ohio, Michigan and Indiana) are OSAPS members. Talk to your colleagues and let them know that membership in OSAPS is free and allows the section to continue in its efforts of providing quality meetings and active communications with its members through mailings, newsletters and email. OSAPS offers physicists the opportunity to attend multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss important research with your colleagues within the region, and it provides an excellent opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to present their research results. As most members reside or work in this area, participation in sectional meetings has the additional benefit of economy; this is particularly important for students. To join OSAPS, go to Member Services or contact a Membership Representative at 301-209-3280.
