The OSAPS Fall 2018 Meeting

Hosted by University of Toledo, Department of Physics & Astronomy on September 28 - 29, 2018

Join your colleagues for two days of collaboration, learning and communication at the Fall 2018 meeting of the OSAPS at The University of Toledo! Symposia Friday afternoon and Saturday morning will address a wide range of hot topics in physics. Also, please plan to join us Friday evening for the banquet and a subsequent public presentation focusing on the roles of energy quantization in physics and astronomy. These meetings provide an ideal venue for students and science teachers to attend, present their research results and engage in active discussion. Information about speakers, abstract submission, registration and travel accommodations are available online or by contacting hosts Randy Ellingson and Nik Podraza.

Confirmed Invited Speakers:

  • Lawrence Anderson-Huang, Physics and Astronomy, University of Toledo
  • Markus Gloeckler, Chief Scientist, First Solar
  • Emily Weiss, Professor of Chemistry, Northwestern University

Student Travel:
Students who present posters or oral presentations at the OSAPS meeting are eligible for travel support from the OSAPS. The amount of the travel grant is up to $100 per student, subject to OSAPS budget constraints. Students will be notified of the amount of the award after the meeting. See meeting website for the application form.

Undergraduate Research Poster Award:
For the first time the OSAPS section will give an award for the best undergraduate poster presentation. The $100 award will be presented at the Friday banquet by the section awards committee.

Report

Report From the Spring 2018 Joint Meeting of OSAPS/MI–AAPT at Michigan State University

The 2018 Spring meeting of the OSAPS was held jointly with the Michigan Section of the AAPT. The meeting was held at Michigan State University (MSU) on March 23rd and 24th, 2018 and had the theme, “Promoting a diverse and inclusive future for physics and astronomy.” Invited presentations focused on the theme and included topics such as APS programs that support greater diversity in physics and astronomy, data collected on the participation of women and students of color in physics at the high school and university-level, and research into the participation of women and students of color in physics. A total of 81 people registered for the meeting and 71 presentations were given.

OSAPS 2018 Spring Meeting Registration: Retired:1, Undergraduates:8, Student Non-Members:20, Student Members:20, Non-members:3, members:29. OSAPS 2018 Spring Meeting Presentations: Invited:4, Contributed:35, Posters:32.

Prof. Danny Caballero, Assistant Professor of Physics at MSU, delivered the welcoming remarks before the first plenary on Friday afternoon, March 23rd. Dr. Monica Plisch from the American Physical Society delivered the first plenary talk, “APS Programs to Promote Diversity and Inclusion,” that discussed the national state of physics participation by women and students of color and how APS has developed specific programs to support greater participation by both. This plenary was followed by a poster session held in the atrium of the Biomedical and Physical Sciences building in which 32 posters were presented. A dinner banquet followed the poster session. At the end of the dinner banquet, Fred Trexler has been awarded the Spring 2018 Howard Maxwell Award for Distinguished Service to the Ohio-Region Section of the American Physical Society. The evening has concluded with second plenary by Dr. Susan White – the director of the American Institute of Physics’s (AIP) Statistical Research Center (SRC). This plenary entitled, “Diversity & Inclusion: Counting things that count,” discussed the state of the participation of women and students of color in physics as collected by a wide variety of survey work conducted by SRC over the years.

The meeting continued on Saturday morning, March 24th, with welcoming remarks from Prof. Phil Duxbury, chair of Department of Physics and Astronomy at Michigan State University. The 3rd plenary was delivered by Prof. Emily Dare from Michigan Technological University and was titled, “Fostering Physics Learning and Interest for Middle School Girls and Boys through STEM Integration”. The plenary concerned research conducted in middle school science classrooms where students were engaged with physics concepts and practices and illustrated differences in participation between girls and boys. The first parallel session with 3 contributed sessions followed consisting of 18 total talks. Lunch was available for purchase after this first parallel session. The final plenary was delivered by Prof. Adrienne Traxler from Wright State University and was titled, “Gender in physics education: Looking back and looking forward”. It focused on the variety of research conducted to investigate gendered effects across physics education and how the field has evolved over time. The second parallel session with 3 contributed sessions followed and consisted of 17 total talks. In addition, a tour of the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory was available at the same time (~25 participants). The meeting ended with the business meeting of the MI-AAPT.

The local organizing committee for the OSAPS 2018 Spring meeting consisted of Petru Fodor (OSAPS), Taoufik Nadji (MI-AAPT), Kim Crosslan (MSU staff), and Danny Caballero (chair). Alyssa Waterson, an MSU student, provided much needed help at registration. The MSU Department of Physics and Astronomy provided convenient spaces for the sessions at no cost.

OSAPS Spring Elections

OSAPS held their annual election cycle last Winter and our newly elected members of the OSAPS Executive Committee are given below:

  • Vice-Chair: Cynthia Aku-Leh, ISciences.
  • Member-at-Large: Andrea Richard, Michigan State University.
  • Student Member-at-Large: Nilaj Chakrabarty, Ohio University

We also want to thank our outgoing Executive Committee officers for their generous and excellent service: Snjezana Balaz (Youngstown State University) finished her term as Chair of the section; Julie Roche (Ohio University) finished a 3-year term as Member-at-Large; and Matthew Mircovich (University of Dayton) finished a 1-year term as Student-Member-at-Large.

Honors and Awards Committee News

On Friday, March 23 at the joint OSAPS/MI-AAPT Spring 2018 meeting, the Maxwell Award for Distinguished Service was presented to Fred Trexler (Spring Arbor University – retired). Fred has been honored for his service on the Executive Committee as Membership Chair as well as his efforts in working with the APS to set up on-line elections for the Section and his continued management of these elections since their inception.

The Honors and Awards Committee has welcomed this spring Uma Ramabadran (Kettering University) as its newest member. Aside from Dr. Ramabadran, the committee is now formed by Mike Crescimanno (Youngstown State University), Chair and Scott Lee (University of Toledo). Nominations for either the Howard Maxwell Award for Distinguished Service or the William Fowler Award for Distinguished Research in Physics should be submitted to Mike Crescimanno.

Help Spread the Word About OSAPS

Not all APS members living in the Ohio Region (Ohio, Michigan, and Indiana) are OSAPS members. Talk to your colleagues and let them know that membership in OSAPS is free and allows the section to continue in its efforts of providing quality meetings and active communications with its members through mailings, newsletters, and email. OSAPS offers physicists the opportunity to attend multi-disciplinary meetings to discuss important research with your colleagues within the region, and it provides an excellent opportunity for both undergraduate and graduate students to present their research results. As most members reside or work in this area, participation in sectional meetings has the additional benefit of the economy; this is particularly important for students. To join OSAPS, go to http://www.aps.org/membership/services/ or contact a Membership Representative at 301-209-3280.
