    Hi all,

We had 133 people on the graduate panel today! Thanks so much for attending!

Let's continue the discussion here. I will be in and out of sessions all day today but will check back here as often as I can.

It was great to hear from the panel today,

Will any of the speakers be presenting later in the conference?

    Hi Egla!

Thank you for attending and glad you enjoyed the session.

Only one of the panelists, Tiffany Nichols, was scheduled to give a talk in Session G04 Connecting Science Policy with Science's History. Unfortunately, the session was cancelled once we moved to a virtual meeting.

If you are looking for more sessions to attend, there is a Career Panel at 3:30PM today (Session K03), during which we will have panelists from industry, national lab, and academia. We are hoping to hold a networking session afterwards with a breakout room for each panelist!

Feel free to add more questions about grad school and grad life here!

    Best,
    Midhat

    Hi everybody,

My name is Vaughn and I have recently decided to pursue a Master's before a Ph.D. in physics.
Has anyone else decided to go this route? If so, do you have any advice? I am also concerned about financing and am trying to find out what kind of questions I should be asking.

    Hi Vaughn,

Great question! I first want to mention that there are many career opportunities available with a physics Masters. For example, check out the physicist profiles section on our website, specifically, Julia Scherschligt and Nathan Swift.

Next, it might be helpful to check out the 2018 Summer FGSA Newsletter piece on Transitioning from Undergraduate to Graduate School. Anashe Bandari writes about her experience of going through a Masters Program before getting a PhD.

As for financing, I don't have many resources for you, but would advise looking at different programs and asking them about tuition and funding/fellowship options. I know that some people tend to go to Europe for their Masters since it is more common. I would also encourage you to check out this program at University of Oregon. It is more geared towards industry rather than for students continuing their education after the MS degree. However, they make internships a part of the curriculum so you make money as you learn!

I hope these are helpful! Good luck to you :)

For all students: here is a study conducted by AIP which examines different factors related to first year graduate students.
    Hope you find it useful!
